Stuff, stuff, and more stuff

First full day of work is now over. Verdict: amusing and boring. I need to remember a spiral.
So, I have a problem.
I have an original novel that I'm working on the final draft of, so I'm trying to plot out the sequal, however, it turns out I have two stories that need to go, but I'm not sure which.
The first focuses on just one of the primary characters in the first novel. (There's about 15 or so in the first novel) He's...elsewhere...and would require multiple new characters who are solo appearances, although there will be honorable mention of them later on if needed. The purpose is to create history for the series and to show some of how things got to where they are now.
The second focuses on the rest of the primary characters and directly follows the first novel. It can be said to be concurrent with the first story above. It's purpose is to establish more to the plot line, and ends with an interesting twist when the primary character who was elsewhere returns to the others.
The first story could be referenced in later stories, I guess, but it could also be it's own novel.
I'm not expecting opinions here, I'm just trying to write out the issue.
