Soooooo... it's August! WHO KNEW?!

It is the FINAL MONTH of my workplace's current fully remote work option, so I am trying to enjoy it to the MAXIMUM LEVEL of enjoyment.

Naturally, I'm also doing things to prepare for going to the office two days a week. Things like: crochet a lap blanket to take with me, because offices are generally Very Cold and also I Need Comfort, Thanks.

(LOL I have not missed having people ask me 'oh, are you cold?' a dozen times a day. Yeah, I WAS cold, that's why I put this blanket over my lap, pal. Now I'm cozy, obvs.)

Music rec from tumblr (tumbl I can't relocate saying this was a classic Murderbot song):

Change My Life, Ben Thornewill

So stand as tall as you can
And if you’re scared
That’s okay, it just means that you care
It just means that you care

HA! THANK YOU

I gave up on doing a good one of Annie. I am WAY too basic, and cannot achieve a good lighting on her beautiful face for what I want. Hers would have said "put that cig out" or "she said we" depending on if I used the one of her in the white, or the one from the juke joint.

CATURDAY

*First August caturday! BIG GOALS for today, which include: relaxing, resting, doing whatever in no particular rush.

*I finished listening to the second book in Freya Marske's 'The Last Binding' trilogy yesterday, and now I am Very Curious about what happens in book 3. (Note of warning: book 1 and 2 both start with a murder, and book 1's was scary enough that I almost stopped right there. But in general the books haven't been Too Dark for me.) (PS love that Edwin got himself a house that won't let his relatives visit; A+ work babe. Also I TOTALLY called the parrot thing in book 2, which was narratively extremely obvious and yet I am unreasonably proud of myself anyway.)

*In fact, I'm looking forward to book 3 so much that I'm planning on listening to something else first, just to prolong this enjoyable state of anticipation.

*Not for too long, though, I only have the audiobook on loan from the library for another 11 days.

*Also I'm nearly done crocheting a lap blanket to take to the office with me when I have to go back in September. I'm hoping that will take some of the sting out of the whole 'forced out of my cozy home nest' thing. (lol probably would work better if I could just drape it over all of me and hide under it)

*It's cool enough this morning that the cat is next to me on her fleecy blanket, which is truly the best of ways to spend a morning <3 <3 <3

send your signal home (bring me back to you), by Crowned_Ladybug

SecUnit doesn’t dignify me with an answer, which I suppose is still better than it sulking. This includes its regular form of sulking such as not listening to me or initiating a shutdown cycle, and the new kind it seems to have recently invented which includes shutting itself in a bathroom and acting like I exist exclusively in the ceiling for the sake of more conveniently arguing with me.

It's after 8 am, and the air coming in through the window is still cooler than the air inside! (This would be even more impressive if it wasn't what I'd consider Unreasonably Warm inside right now, but it IS impressive!)

For our next weather-related achievement: RAIN?!?!?!?!?!?

*system is supposed to automatically update the status of change requests
*system is not doing that

*there is no way to manually update the status
(*probably I am not supposed to manually update it even if there was a way?)

*I notified someone of this issue last Thursday
*uh, I may have mentioned it wasn't a crisis?

*I'm not actually sure if it's a crisis or not
*I sort of hoped the problem would resolve itself

*it has not
*also no one has gotten back to me about the issue

*currently using the 'pretending the status has updated' strategy and proceeding as if it has
*this will teach me not to use the phrase 'no rush' in my emails, lol

me when it is 50F degrees out: I love the outdoors! I'm a person who does things outdoors! I can do multiple things in one day! sometimes I almost feel like I'm handling my life in a semi-reasonable way!

me when it is 70F degrees out: I love the outdoors, as long as I'm in the shade, or maybe just inside with the windows open! I can do ONE(1) thing in ONE(1) day, which is sort of sometimes a semi-sustainable way to manage my life in a place where it's much colder than this for much of the year!

Looking back at yesterday's thrilling saga post, it occurred to me that it had not exactly been clear.

My intent was to say 'wow, I heard that song and it made me realize how much I missed hearing songs I knew, which motivated me to do a thing I've been meaning to do for ten days and which has already improved my daily joy; thanks, song!'

What I actually said was 'I heard a song I knew on a radio station, and that motivated me to move the radio so I could listen to a different station'

(not EXACTLY the same vibe, I now realize)

TO CLARIFY: WHAT A GREAT SONG!

1. nostalgia factor, heck yeah

2. when I get a song stuck in my head, it's usually about three lines of the song -- that song only has three lines, so I've got the WHOLE THING, which is great

3. I am listening to the radio right now!

It took ten days of 'I have no idea what I'm listening to' before I heard ONE (1) song that I recognized, and WHAT A SONG IT WAS!

Even better, it's a song I ALREADY POSTED ABOUT, way back in 2014: Is There a Ghost, by Band of Horses

In 2014, I said "I kind of like the song"

In 2025, THIS song is what finally motivated me to move the radio to a different corner of the room, where I can once again hear my favorite station.

Property Exception, by tottiki

I didn’t have to let it happen. Of course, that had been true for a lot of things in the little over 40 000 hours since I’d hacked my governor module. I’d kept letting things happen anyway, mostly so I wouldn’t have to make that final call on whether to go on my destined killing spree or be disassembled. But this specific thing, I really didn’t have to let happen.

ellipsus thoughts

I've been trying out ellipsus for writing during this Battleship season, and I like it! I'm sure I can come up with some more specific thoughts...

*you can change the background color scheme to be a soft rainbow, so that's definitely a plus (there are other options too, I just like the rainbow a lot)

*there's a timer! I've only used it once, and immediately forgot about it until a little pop-up window congratulated me for writing 114 words, and I was like 'what? OH right, the timer!' which is great for me, because a lot of times I get distracted by timer countdowns and they turn out to be more stressful than helpful

*there's a focus mode! I've never used it, because I prefer being distracted

*I genuinely like that my writing only goes in about half the width of the screen -- it really reduces the 'scary blank page' effect for me, and makes me less worried about what my words are doing (similar to the benefits of writing on a phone for me, just way easier since it's on my computer and I have a full keyboard and it's easy to move blocks of text around)

*can't speak to its ability to handle really long files (internet says it's not great, similar to the issues gdocs has with anything over 10,000 words), but it does very well with the low thousands

*it's not full of a bunch of random other docs and work stuff like my gdrive, so that's a big plus for me!

*yes, I'm absolutely going to see how work-appropriate I can make it look to see if I can get away with using it once they drag us back to the office, though I've previously had better luck using popped-out email windows or writer for that (writer has the benefit of typewriter sound effects!)

adding to the list

Couldn't get my fitbit to sync to the app this morning, tried all the usual things:

*just refresh it a bunch more times to see if the problem will fix itself
*quit the app and try again
*update the app
*turn the phone all the way off and then on again

None of these worked, though I did manage to identify that the likely problem was my fitbit itself failing to bluetooth. (Holding the fitbit next to the phone and saying 'see, it's right here!' did not help.)

Consulted the internet and decided the easiest / least likely to delete my unsynced data option to try next was 'restarting' the fitbit. This mystical process seems to be different for each style of fitbit, but this one involved plugging it into the charger and holding both sides of it for ten seconds. (HOW do they come up with these things???)

Anyway, got the beep and the fitbit logo (not a smiley face as promised, very disappointing), and SURPRISE suddenly bluetooth COULD find my fitbit and connect, A MIRACLE OF TECHNOLOGY!

All fixed now, I guess, and now 'restart fitbit' can be added to the list of usual things to try!
